Un-tied

I posted a few months ago about our trip to the dentist and how we found out that Lucas was tongue tied.  Well he started to talk, and talk, and talk and we began to notice it more, and more, and more.  His speech I mean.

Here's a little experiment:

Press your tongue up against the back of your bottom teeth.  Now open your mouth and try to talk, keeping your tongue in place.....

That is what Lucas sounds like when he talks.  It's miserable isn't it?  We decided that if we didn't hurry and get the surgery done, the worse his speech might become.  He tries and tries to talk and most of the time you can understand him, but when he gets talking quickly which is becoming more of his thing, then it turns into a jumbled mess.  We have to ask him "what did you say" about a million times so then he repeats himself and it's just so sad to watch.

On Tuesday I took him back to the dentist.  He was excited because he loves it there.  My sister Mary works there so that is a bonus.  He climbed right up into the chair, got his headphones on so he could listen to and watch "Cars" up on the screen and then he asked for the piggy nose (gas).  He was a happy camper.

After just a few minutes he got really silly.  He kept saying "my daddy's in north Dakota" and "look, there Mac and McQueen".  He kept repeating himself.  He must of said it 20 times before the Dr came in to check on him.  Mary and I sat and laughed so hard that we had tears.  The whole office was laughing because when he would say it, it was so loud, since he was trying to hear himself talk and watch a movie at the same time.  Funny stuff!!!

Pretty soon the dentist came in and gave him a little numbing jell under his tongue, then he gave him a shot of stuff to numb his tongue.  Then they rolled out the laser and began the procedure.

Amazing the technology they have.  Before I took Lucas in I was googling the procedure and it was showing pictures of people with stitches and it just looked awful.  But now they have this brand new laser that cuts and cauterizes at the same time.  It was done in 15 minutes and it didn't bleed at all.  He is back to his old self.

I am pretty happy with the results.  He is still trying to figure out how to talk now that his tongue is not tied down, but he is already enunciating some sounds much better than before.
